Congenital Cytomegalovirus Collective Project
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) announces the availability of funds through the Birth Defects Prevention and Surveillance Program to improve Wisconsin’s awareness and screening of congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV).
This funding opportunity is for the project period July 1, 2024 – June, 30, 2025. The Birth Defects Prevention and Surveillance Program plans to make up to $40,000 available annually. There are two possible renewals.
Project Overview
The agency receiving this funding support will be expected, at a minimum, to perform the following project activities:
• Establish and convene a statewide taskforce on cCMV to gather input from individuals and agencies with professional expertise or lived experience with cCMV. The makeup of this taskforce should include members of the Wisconsin Birth Defects Prevention and Surveillance Program, Wisconsin Newborn Screening Program, hospital representatives (nurse managers, neonatologists, Infectious Disease specialists, IT hospital systems, pharmacists, etc.) with and without existing cCMV screening protocols, audiology representatives, nonprofits with a vested interest in supporting healthy babies, parents, and others. This taskforce will meet regularly to:
o Develop and disseminate recommended screening and follow-up protocols for hospitals to screen babies for cCMV.
o Develop and disseminate recommended audiologic follow-up protocols for babies identified as cCMV positive.
• Promote community outreach and education regarding cCMV prevention and screening. Existing and/or new products, including written materials, presentations and/or videos may be utilized.
• Develop a report outlining gap areas and remaining steps for implementing high-quality, systematic, cCMV screening statewide.
